Asperger syndrome, autism and attention disorders: a comparative study of the cognitive profiles of 120 children

Article Abstract:

A study examined the cognitive profiles of 120 children with Asperger syndrome, autistic disorder and attention disorders using the Wechsler Intelligence Scale-Revised (WISC-R). Findings revealed a 63% overall rate of correct diagnostic classification. The autistic disorder group showed a peak on Block Design while the Asperger syndrome group demonstrated good verbal ability and depressions on Object Assembly and Coding. Meanwhile, the attention disorder group experienced troughs on Coding and Arithmetic. The variance on the WISC was the result of Kaufman's Verbal Comprehension, Perceptual Organization and Freedom from Distractability factors.
