Assessing the links between interparental conflict and child adjustment: the conflicts and problem-solving scales

Article Abstract:

The Conflicts and Problem-Solving Scales (CPS) validly assesses marital conflict in terms of frequency, severity, resolution and efficacy, and various conflict strategies. Scales for conflict strategies serve as reliable measures of cooperation, avoidance, stalemate, physical and verbal aggression and child involvement. CPS correlates with other measures of marital conflict, such as the Dyadic Adjustment Scale and the Conflict Tactics Scales. Children's descriptions of interparental conflict agree with that of parents.

Effects of interparental aggression on children's adjustment: the moderating role of cognitive appraisal and coping

Article Abstract:

Interparental conflict gives rise to emotional and behavioral problems in children. Children's ineffective coping responses and problematic beliefs about the conflict are associated with their low self-esteem, depression and externalizing behavior. Study results show that their perceptions on social supports and peer relationships including levels of peer availability seem to soften the negative impact of marital conflict on them.
