Brief report: depressive symptoms and quality of life in adolescents with b-thalassaemia

Article Abstract:

Beta-thalassaemia is indigenous to Mediterranean countries and it occurs in other countries due to the effects of migration. A study conducted to determine the presence of depressive symptoms in adolescents 12-16 years with b-thalassaemia and to explore whether it influences aspects of their quality of life revealed that thalassaemia adolescents reported more depressive symptoms and a lower quality of life than patients with short term injuries.

Research across a sample of 199 Australian high school students showed that personality, environmental factors and conventional behavior were related to alcohol, tobacco and marijuana use. Among the factors specific to such behavior were self-esteem, family support, peer pressures and school attendance. However, the intensity of factors varied across drugs, with alcohol ranking highest in occurrence.
