Development of phonological and orthographic processing in reading aloud, in silent reading, and in spelling: a four-year longitudinal study

Article Abstract:

This article examines the development of phonological and orthographic processing from the middle of grade 1 to the end of grade 4. The authors, analyzing the effects of regularity and lexicality in reading aloud and analyzing the effect of pseudohomophony in silent reading, conclude that the phonological procedure is the most significant mechanism for reading acquisition.

Young children's sensitivity to probalistic phonotactics in the developing lexicon

Article Abstract:

A series of three experiments examined children's sensitivity to probablistic phonotactic structure as reflected in the relative frequencies with which speech sounds occur and co-occur in American English. Implications for the acoustic nature of both developing and mature lexical representations have been discussed.

What do children do in the rime-analogy task? An examination of the skills and strategies used by early readers

Article Abstract:

This article examines the reading skills and strategies of young children. The authors, analyzing a results from a study of a group of 4 and 5 year olds, conclude that children relied more on phonology rather than orthography, however, the demands of the task determined the strategies employed.
