Differential family environments of bulimics and victims of childhood sexual abuse: achievement orientation

Article Abstract:

The family atmosphere of bulimic and normal eaters, abused and nonabused individuals varied considerably conforming to earlier studies but simultaneous analysis of eating behavior and abuse status failed to show differences between normal and bulimic subjects. The bulimic's characteristics of family cohesion, independence, and control were similar to those reported by normal eaters. The implications of familial achievement orientation are discussed.

Responding to graduate students' professional deficiencies: a national survey

Article Abstract:

The results of a survey of 71 clinical psychology doctoral programs suggests that too few such graduate programs have written policies in place to deal with observed professional deficiencies in their students. Nearly 90% of all survey respondents reported that problems with student professionalism existed at their schools. Among the listed professional deficiencies are limited clinical skills, ethics problems, and personal or emotional problems.

Differences in family of origin functioning among graduate students of different disciplines

Article Abstract:

A University of Alaska at Anchorage study of graduate students from various disciplines, including psychology, engineering, and business, shows that family background is primarily responsible for a person's decision to choose a mental health service career. Scores derived from the Index of Family Relations indicate that psychology graduates encountered more family problems during their lifetimes than graduate students in other programs.
