Essential and reactive alcoholism: a review

Article Abstract:

Essential alcoholics differ from reactive alcoholics in having more severe alcoholism with an earlier onset, less education and a lower occupational status, more conflicts with others, lesser number of long lasting friendships, greater degree of antisocial tendencies and behaviors. They also have greater family history of alcoholism, more affected neuropsychological functions, and a lower blood pressure at rest. Previous studies in the field and clinical implications for treatment are discussed.

Risk for alcoholism, antisocial behavior, and response perseveration

Article Abstract:

Astudy was conducted to test the association between alcoholism and antisocial personality (ASP) using a card task that evaluates antisocial tendencies and two personality questionnaires. The study employed 14 men with a multigenerational familial history of alcoholism (MGH) and 14 men with no family history of alcoholism. Results of the card task indicated a possible propensity toward antisocial behavior in the MGH group, but there were no differences on the ASP questionnaires.

Provocation, acute alcohol intoxication, cognitive performance, and aggression

Article Abstract:

Neuropsychological tests enable an analysis of the correlations between extensive intoxication due to alcohol, aggressive behavior, provocation and frontal-lobe function. The response of subjects with low cognitive functioning to provocation was more aggressive than that of the others. These individuals, upon alcohol intoxication, exhibit an enhanced intensity of shock. These studies imply the increase in aggression due to provocation, coupled with alcohol intoxication.
