A longitudinal evaluation of a social support model of medication adherence among HIV-Positive men and women on antiretroviral therapy

Article Abstract:

A cognitive-affective model of medication adherence based on social support theory and research, Antiretroviral therapy (ART) has demonstrated remarkable success in inhibiting viral replication and reducing morbidity, mortality and overall health care costs for HIV-positive persons. Interventions for HIV-positive persons on ART are especially needed and given the lingering stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS, even in high/prevalence areas.

This is a well done study that points to to how help from others or lack of support influences cogntivie processes that in turn affect healthful behavior (adherence). We need to move to the next level, that is, design and test interventions that creates social climates necessary to generate support to those who need it.
