Improving multiple behaviors for colorectal cancer prevention among African American church members

Article Abstract:

The Wellness for African Americans Through Churches (WATCH) project conducted a randomized trial on 587 African American members of North Carolina churches to compare the effectiveness of 2 strategies to promote colorectal cancer preventive behaviors. The results showed that the Tailored print and video (TPV) intervention significantly improved fruit and vegetable consumption recreational physical activity (2.5 metabolic task equivalents per hour) whereas the Lay Health Advisor (LHA) intervention did not prove effective because of suboptimal reach and diffusion.

Predicting youth access to tobacco: the role of youth versus store-clerk behavior and issues of ecological validity

Article Abstract:

Youths less than 18 years were sent to purchase cigarettes to stores, and youth typical research versus manipulative behavior was contrasted with the clerk behavior (requests for youth ID cards) to examine their relative contributions to youth access to tobacco. The results showed that the clerk behavior was the strongest predictor of cigarette sales to youth and hence underscore the need for intervention with merchants.
