Impulsivity and inhibitory control

Article Abstract:

Impulsive behavior is caused by an inability to inhibit prepotent responses. Difficulty in controlling impulses results from problems in inhibitory processing rather than from having superior ability in performing prepotent responses. This implies that impulsive people seem to have difficulty inhibiting preponent responses not because their prepotent responses are extremely swift but because their inhibitory responses are extremely slow.

Continuous Performance Tests: a comparison of modalities

Article Abstract:

A study of Continuous Performance Tests (CPT) for studying sustained attention and impulsivity in subjects thought to suffer from attentional deficits reveals that auditory enhanced the difficulty of tasks. Vigilance tasks were found easier than the distractibility tasks. This use of CPT tests was different from the norm in that auditory stimuli were used.
