Infants' recognition of the sound patterns of their own names

Article Abstract:

The study to examine whether 4.5-month-olds like to hear their own names over foils that were either similar or dissimilar in stress pattern showed that the young infants identify the sound patterns of their own names. Infants prefer their names in comparison to the foils that have the same stress patterns as well as foils with reverse patterns. The findings suggest that very young infants already start to identify sound patterns usually spoken in the infant's environments.

Computation of conditional probability statistics by 8-month-old infants

Article Abstract:

The computational abilities of eight-month-old infants applied to the learning words are probed using trisyllabic nonsense words presented to the infants as three-minute corpus. The experiment was designed to identify the type of statistical computation used by infants to find solutions for word segmentation. Results reveal that these infants utilize a transitional probability computation in segmenting the series of syllables presented into words.

Natural musical intervals: evidence from infant listeners

Article Abstract:

Infants detect subtle changes in pure tones more when the tones follow a simple frequency ratio than a complex one. A study reveals that nine- and six-month-old infants exhibit a superior ability to detect simple ratios in the context of harmonic and melodic intervals. The results confirm the presence of processing predispositions as biological basis for preference of simple frequency ratios over complex ratios.
