Is the discrepancy criterion for defining developmental disorders valid?

Article Abstract:

Most of the development disorders are defined by an achievement discrepancy rather than measurable deviations, exceeding a threshold, from normal development. An assessment of parameters that determine variability across abilities and assessment of relationships between achievement discrepancies and behavioral disturbances by examining 390 children aged 3 to 12 years for five ability constructs and nine behavioral disturbances shows that underachievement on one or more abilities, not unequal achievement across abilities, is invariably associated with behavioral disturbance.

Annotation: The neural basis of social impairments in autism: the role of the dorsal medial-frontal cortex and anterior cingulate system

Article Abstract:

System involving the dorsal medial-frontal cortex (DMFC) and anterior cingulate (AC) may contribute to the development of the tendency to initiate joint attention in infancy. Impairment in development of DMFC/AC system could constitute a neural substrate for socio-cognitive deficits in autism.
