Modern applications of traditional sanctions

Article Abstract:

Sanctions used in certain primitive societies and current recommendations for intermediate sanctions to relieve prison overcrowding and to make penalties for criminal behavior more appropriate are somewhat similar. The primitive societies used for this comparison are the Cheyenne Indian culture, the Alaskan Natives and the Micronesian Islanders and some of the categories of penalties used in these societies involve restitution, forms of banishment and reflective justice. The usage of restitution in modern times and modern variants on incarceration such as weekend imprisonment, halfway houses, house arrest and intensive supervision are compared.

Matrilineal descent and juvenile offender counseling

Article Abstract:

Rehabilitative counselors and probation officers using the matrilineal lineage concept seek out juvenile offenders' uncles, or other influential adult male relatives, to assist with counseling. Maternal kin of juvenile offenders, particularly uncles, are useful in supporting counseling because, in maternal descent societies, uncles traditionally have more disciplinary authority over children than natural fathers. In dealing with immigrant children from patrilineal cultures or US juveniles from single-parent homes, counselors should find other appropriate male role models, including cousins or uncles.
