When it's time to drop out of the picture

Article Abstract:

The issue of retaining control of a family-run business often becomes a problem when the owner or owners retire. There are times when it is not possible for other members of the family to buy out the head of the company or to provide the two basic requirements of running a profitable firm: the highest management standards and a healthy balance sheet. A management buy-out (MBO) provides a way for retiring business owners to ensure that their companies will remain independent and protected from corporate takeovers when they do decide to sell out and enjoy the fruits of their labor. An alternative to an MBO is a management buy-in in which the incoming manager is committed to protecting the company's independence and maintaining the kind of standards the firm is known for.
