Reasoning and rehabilitation in Britain: the results of the Straight Thinking on Probation (STOP) Programme

Article Abstract:

The British Straight Thinking on Probation (STOP) program is an example of programs using cognitive-behavioral methods. Each part of the program encourages thought before action, consideration of the consequences of such action, and learning varied ways of dealing with interpersonal and social problems. Studies of the reconviction of program participants suggest that the program works better than imprisonment and is also cheaper. Results indicate the need for more study on how to maintain the effect of the program, though.

Resocializing young offenders in the kibbutz

Article Abstract:

The success of the Kibbutz Resocialization Program in Israel shows that rehabilitation of criminals is possible. Results of the first 26 young offenders accepted by the program were studied. The major limitation of the study was subject self-selection, but of the program graduates, less than 27% became recidivists, while convicted adult criminals as a whole have a 65.8 recidivism rate in Israel. Positive psychological changes are detailed.
