Reflections

Article Abstract:

A psychoanalyst reflects on how her personality and professional experiences influenced her interaction with her patients, giving her a more flexible outlook on therapy. Her time in Germany allowed her to see the benefits of patients taking time off from analysis when needed, allowing for personal growth on their own. Partial retirement led to the development of therapy over the phone for former patients, with trips back to New York for more conventional appointments three times a year.

From the word to the scene: an expanded conceptualization for therapeutic action

Article Abstract:

Successful psychotherapy may depend on a combination of empathy towards the patient, interpretation of his narrative, and confirming the authenticity of his story. Psychotherapeutic treatment may come to a halt when the patient misconstrues the therapist's comments, but may progress past this plateau if the therapist recognizes the problem and helps the patient through it. The therapist should pay attention to his own nonverbal cues and not try to control the patient's responses.

A tranfer of technique: from induced dsong recall to the induced recall of paintings

Article Abstract:

Asking a psychotherapy patient to recall a painting may help the patient bring to mind and understand memories that may be useful in treatment. Patients who have a background in art may make unintentional connections between difficult memories and the recall of certain paintings. Therapeutic cases where a patient is asked to recall a painting or a song are presented.
