Self-esteem, eating problems, and psychological well-being in a cohort of schoolgirls aged 15-16: a questionnaire and interview study

Article Abstract:

A cohort of 15-16 year old schoolgirls with abnormal eating behavior shows a high degree of eating pathology and low self-esteem. Girls with higher levels of eating concern show a higher level of global self-dissatisfaction. They also show greater dissatisfaction with the their physical appearance and family relationships. Eating disorders and excessive weight control could be an expression of problems with self-image and self-esteem.

Global self-esteem as contingent on body satisfaction among patients with bulimia nervosa: lack of diagnostic specificity?

Article Abstract:

Body dissatisfaction is responsible for a higher amount of global self-esteem among patients with bulimia nervosa, as compared to nonpsychiatric individuals. Individuals with depression also show similar relationship between global self-esteem and body dissatisfaction. The correlation between self-esteem and body dissatisfaction is greatest among the nonbulimic depressed individuals.

Effect of gender composition of school on body concerns in adolescent women

Article Abstract:

Research investigating the relationships between eating disorders in adolescent girls and schools' gender composition in Australia is presented. It is concluded that there are differences in motivations for thinness between single and co-educational schools.
