Stress, psychosocial resources, and depressive symptomatology during pregnancy in low-income, inner-city women

Article Abstract:

This article examines the relationship between stress, social support, self-esteem, and depression during and after pregnancy in poor, inner-city women. Results indicate that life stress events were significantly associated with increased depression while social support, self-esteem, and financial resources were associated with lower levels of depression.

An exploratory study of social support, distress, and life disruption among low-income Hispanic women under treatment for early stage breast cancer

Article Abstract:

This article investigates the relationship between social support, life disruption, and feelings of distress among Hispanic women during their first year after a breast cancer diagnosis. Results indicate that instrumental support from a spouse and emotional support from family and friends before surgery help to reduce stress levels after surgery.
