The Body Investment Scale: construction and validation of a body experience scale

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to construct a novel measure of body image with regards to four factors, namely, attitudes and feelings, protection of the body, body care and comfort in touch. The Body Investment Scale (BIS) pertains specifically to suicidal behavior and can be employed to examine various pathological and normal behaviors. Four experiments were performed to analyze the psychometrics of the BIS. Results indicate that the BIS measures the four factors with high internal consistency in each factor.

The body investment scale: construction and validation of a body experience scale

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze a novel measure of emotional investment in the body. Four aspects of the bodily self were considered as the most critical to the issue of self-preservation versus self-destruction. These include body image feelings and attitudes, comfort in physical contact, body care, and body protection. Results indicated that negative aspects of the body can be indicative of self-destructive processes and can be determined between suicidal and nonsuicidal populations.

Additional support for the reliability and validity of the Modified Scale for Suicide Ideation

Article Abstract:

A study of the suicidal tendencies displayed by a sample of 91 18-to-21-year-old college students, using the Modified Scale for Suicide Ideation (MSSI), revealed the utility of this self-report measure in accurately estimating suicidal behavior. The stable MSSI, which has partial correlations with the interview-based Suicide Ideation Scale, can be employed in assessing the levels of suicide ideation in various population subgroups.
