The inheritance of desired characteristics: children's view of the role of intention in parent-offspring resemblance

Article Abstract:

Pre-school children seem to believe that maternal intention could play a part in the inheritance of physical characteristics, according to research designed to assess the beliefs of pre-school children about the role of maternal intentions in the determination of children's traits. Children in the intention condition believed that a daughter would have the physical characteristics that her mother wanted, rather than the characteristics the mother possessed. Children's judgments did not differ from chance in the prediction or friend conditions.
