The role of maternal cognitions in infant sleep problems as assessed by a new instrument, the Maternal Cognitions about Infant Sleep Questionnaire

Article Abstract:

The Maternal Cognitions about Infant Sleep Questionnaire (MCISQ) is a new instrument, and its psychometric properties are assessed, along with its development. Also tested was the hypothesis that maternal cognitions are associated with and specific to infant sleep problems. Results showed that doubts about parenting competence, anger at the demands of the infant and maternal cognitions about limit setting, were associated with infant sleep problems, although cognitions about infant hunger or cot death were not.

Life events, social support and the risk of sudden infant death syndrome

Article Abstract:

The maternal social support factor fails to determine the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), while the number of stressful life events is associated with higher risk of SIDS. Stressful life events are unrelated to SIDS when the social factors are taken into account. Although perinatal and social factors are able to predict child abuse, they are unable to predict SIDS. In SIDS families, the occurrence of stressful life events is very common.
