The variable manifestations and contextual meanings of anorexia nervosa: two case illustrations from Hong Kong

Article Abstract:

Case studies of two Hong Kong Chinese patients with anorexia nervosa are presented to show contrasting clinical presentations of this eating disorder. The main difference between the two patients is that one had a 'fat phobia' while the other did not. The first patient's fear of fatness could be attributed to her rivalry with her slim elder sister and her exposure to Western culture. In contrast, the second patient's self-starvation was prompted by her desire to gain control over her domineering mother.

Childhood abuse and eating disorders in gay and bisexual men

Article Abstract:

The relation between eating disorders and a history of childhood abuse in gay and bisexual men and the effect of substance abuse on this relationship are studied. It is seen that gay and bisexual men with a history of childhood abuse would be more likely to have eating disorders as adults and that a history of depression and substance use disorders did not mediate this relationship.
