Theory of mind abilities in individuals with autism, Down syndrome, and mental retardation of unknown etiology: the role of age and intelligence

Article Abstract:

Individuals with autism, Down syndrome and mental retardation of unknown etiology, with matched verbal and performance mental and chronological ages, show a limited understanding of the theory of mind. The three groups show deficit performance on the cognitive theory of mind tasks. All the clinical groups show similar performance on the false belief and deception tasks, and find these more difficult than the fact and value belief tasks. The theory of mind abilities correlate with verbal ability for persons with autism. The intergroup differences are discussed with a focus on autism.
