Use of limestone karst forests by Bomean orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus morio) in the Sangkulirang Peninsula, East Kalimantan , Indonesia

Article Abstract:

A 49km of nest surveys are conducted in the limestone karst forest in the Sangkulirang Peninsula, East Kalimantan , Indonesia to obtain the first quantitative estimates of orangutan densities in this habitat and 28km of surveys in the nearby lowland Dipterocarp forests for comparison. It is concluded that limestone karst forests are of low relevance for safeguarding the future of orangutans in East Kalimantan, since difference of densities is not correlated with variation in liana abundance, fig stem density or stump density.

Lemur responses to edge effects in the Vohibola III Classified Forest, Madagascar

Article Abstract:

Forest edges are dynamic zones characterized by the penetration of conditions from the surrounding environment into the forest interior and changes in population dynamics as a consequence of edge effects can be defined as indirect biological effects. Although edge effects influence many tropical organisms they are particularly relevant to lemurs because of the highly fragmented forest landscapes found in Madagascar.
