Food for thought: cross-classification and category organization in a complex real-world domain

Article Abstract:

Seven studies were conducted to analyze how people represent, access and make inferences about foods. The representation of the category was evaluated by category generation, item sortings and category ratings. Results showed that the high-level category of foods was organized simultaneously by taxonomic categories for the kind of food. Findings also indicated that multiple categories and methods of categorizing can be utilized in a single domain at one time.
