Why causation need not follow from statistical association: boundary conditions for the evaluation of generative and preventive causal powers

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze how people discover causal mechanism involving a single cause-to-effect link. Two boundary conditions determined in the power PC theory were examined. Scenarios concerning two domains of six conditions were established to increase the generality of the study. In addition, the analogous specification of the relation between nonpositive contrasts and preventive causal power was examined.

Representation versus process in simplicity of serial pattern completion

Article Abstract:

This study uses three experiments to investigate the inductive reasoning involved in serial pattern completion. The results indicate that the preferred extrapolations of serial patterns are determined by the simplicity of the solution itself, not by the simplicity of the solution process.

Distinguishing genuine from spurious causes: a coherence hypothesis

Article Abstract:

People are systematically able to distinguish between false, or spurious, and genuine cause-and-effect relationships, even when there is a clear association between events. This study focuses on the processes underlying the identification of these types of causal relationships.
