Word frequency and word difficulty: a comparison of counts in four corpora

Article Abstract:

The high relationship between word frequency and word difficulty in four corpora reveals the validity of using word frequency to estimate word difficulty. Word frequency analyses can readily estimate all sampled words, but are unable to determine the difficulty of some words. The relationship between word frequency and word difficulty increases with larger sample sizes and better sampling precision. Although the samples collected by electronic text have a lot of potential, caution needs to be maintained in conducting these collections.

Durations of stimuli displayed on video display terminals: (n-1)/f + persistence

Article Abstract:

The use of video display terminals are being used for exhibiting stimuli in psychophysical experiments. However, there are problems limiting their effectiveness such as diminisher resolution, brightness, contrast and stimulus duration. A correct algorithm for the stimulus duration is calculated as (n-1)/f + p where n is the number of scans, f is the raster frequency and p is for phosphor persistence. This equation is suggested to avoid overestimation of stimulus duration.

Advanced technology and the quality of working life: the effects of word processing on video typists

Article Abstract:

A case study of typing jobs in an engineering consultancy found that management felt that closer control over typing work increased productivity, while it did increase productivity, the typists felt they were not able to realize the full potential of the new technology.
