Article Abstract:

The Type Directors Club started out as an exclusive club for the small number of type directors in New York, NY, when it was formed in 1946. The introduction of phototypesetting in the 1970s widened access to type to such a degree that the club expanded to encompass all kinds of members involved in typographic communication across the country. It is devoted to maintaining typographic excellence in an era of new electronic media, and the club holds an annual competition toward this end.

The Pushpin Group continues under the leadership of D.K. Holland and Seymour Chwast.
