Infographics under Time pressure

Article Abstract:

Time magazine's 'infographics' combine symbolic illustration and hard data to visually depict an article with one or two images. An example of the creative editorial process used to create infographics is presented step-by-step. The graphics editor, after a meeting with the story editors, picks a computer artist and a researcher to work on the piece. The researcher for the infographic data has as much responsibility to be accurate as a text-based counterpart. The computer artist, after much trial-and-error, settles on an illustration and scans a hand-sketched version into Adobe Illustrator 88 computer graphics software where all the necessary refinements are made. Appropriate metaphors are expressed in a visually compelling way to enhance the text-based article.

A guide to excellence: using Excel graphics to tell your story

Article Abstract:

The transformation of two Microsoft Excel 2.2 charts using CA-Cricket Graphs and Macdraw II and Adobe Illustrator 88 are compared in use and output. Because Excel lacks some basic design aids, it is difficult to produce a very attractive chart on it. For Excel users, the only solution is often a separate draw program. Attention to detail and a little restraint are highly useful in creating graphs. Step-by-step instructions for the use of each are given.
