Top-notch typography: Quark Xpress 2.1

Article Abstract:

Quark's new release, Xpress 2.1, has more extensive typographical controls and a better manual. On Screen Font Rendering is one of Xpress 2.1's new features, which gives you good-looking screen fonts in any size over 24 points thereby making kerning and positioning easier. Font rendering is only possible with non-encrypted fonts. The program includes a Kerning Table Edit feature, a tracking feature that can be customized, and a H&J (hyphenation and justification) feature where spacing and hyphenation specifications can be entered. In response to the baseline alignment problem in Xpress 2.0, Version 2.1 has added an invisible baseline grid. Xpress 2.1 stores most of its information in an 'Xpress Data' file which any service bureau would need to print the document according to your specifications. A considerable improvement over Version 2.0, Version 2.1 still does not enhance Xpress's layout features.

Mac: Multi-Ad Creator

Article Abstract:

Multi-Ad Services' $995 advertisement makeup program for the Macintosh, Multi-Ad Creator, is easy to install and to learn, but problems with measurement and color separation keep it from appealing to the heavy ad production market. The program draws page dimensions and suggests three layouts according to user-input elements. Drawing tools allow the user to create drop shadows, custom borders and to rotate any object freely, but a curved line can not be drawn. A Superior control automatically reduces text to half of its original point size, then raises and aligns it with other characters. However, the smallest increment in points for the ruler in every five, numbered increments are at 50-point intervals and the ruler's zero points can not be moved. Although Multi-Ad Creator can perform four-color separations, overlapping, pure colors do not print properly.
