Maya Lin: one driving idea

Article Abstract:

Maya Lin creates works of art and architecture. Lin designed the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial in 1981. She also designed a memorial for all the people who died in the civil rights movement for Montgomery, AL's Southern Poverty Law Center in 1988. She designed New York's Museum of African Art in 1993. Lin created the environmental sculpture, 'The Wave Field' next to the University of Michigan's engineering building in 1994.

Murray Moss believes that Americans have not yet developed an informed appreciation for industrial design. Through his Manhattan store, called Moss, he is attempting to foster such an appreciation. The store, which resembles an art gallery, offers an eclectic collection of flatware, glassware, home furnishings and gift objects, all intended to showcase their design and designers.

Filmmaker Ken Burns makes historical documentaries including the multipart films "Baseball" and "The Civil War." He intends to arouse emotions engendered by historical events, broadcast on public television to avoid commercial interruptions. His next productions include 'Jazz," 'American Lives' segments, and films on Frank Lloyd Wright and Lewis and Clark.
