Viral marketing involves strategies that encourage individuals to pass marketing messages on to others. Ideally, this creates a potential for exponential growth in a message's exposure and influence. The Internet has the effect of amplifying this type of phenomenon. Jupiter Communications reported in Nov 1999 that 80 percent of online companies are using viral tactics.

iQVC, which represents QVC Corp online, was begun in 1996 and quickly became a leading e-commerce organization. iQVC provides access to more than 80,000 products, including electronics, clothing and jewelry, and it is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. iQVC receives approximately 130 million visits per week, and in 1999, it brought in $97 million of revenue to QVC Corp. iQVC regards customer relationship management (CRM) as a paramount concern.
