Publishing solutions for contemporary scholars: The library as innovator and partner

Article Abstract:

The Cornell University Library's Center for Innovative Publishing (CIP) is a single integrated unit offering a variety of publishing services to increase access to scholars in an affordable manner, while preserving records in the traditional role of a library. The CIP offers an online service of mathematics and statistics journals called Project Euclid, an e-print service for physicists and computer scientists called arXiv, an institutional repository DSpace, an open source content management software DPubS, and a service bureau for publishing content in all disciplines and various formats.

DPubs: The development of an open source publishing system

Article Abstract:

Digital library instantiation, known as DPubS, was designed specifically to organize, navigate, access, and deliver both open access and subscription controlled scholarly publication. Cornell University Library in partnership with the Pennsylvania State University libraries and the Pennsylvania State University Press were awarded a $670,000 grant to generalize and enhance the DPubS system and release the resulting improved version of the software under an open source license.

Article Abstract:

The history of MIT Press' CogNet online publishing service is discussed. CogNet has had great success as online publisher because it works closely with the community it serves, researchers in cognitive functions and brain research. While most scholar research remains a print product, successful electronic communities like CogNet are a useful alternative.
