Software's siren song

Article Abstract:

Computers and desktop-publishing software have brought about many advances in the graphic design market. However, computer software programs that are capable of producing color pre-press film for making plates in color printing may not work as simply as they should. For instance, although the color pre-press software places more control in the graphic designer's hands, it also creates pre-press nightmares for printers when the image that was created on the computer cannot be recreated on the press.

Try a pencil once a week

Article Abstract:

Computer-aided design has greatly expanded design potential, but all designers should remember that technological innovation does not take the place of individual creativity. Such tools are only the means though which creativity is demonstrated. Software consists of mathematical formulas, but it takes a creative designer to know what makes good design. Designers should occasionally use a pencil to capture the feel of traditional design.

A brave new world

Article Abstract:

Digital technology presents a bewildering new world to design professionals. CD-ROM, a digital method of storing sound and images, is central to digital design. From a practical standpoint, CD-ROM is not suited to all designers, but digital equipment makers are developing hand-held CD-ROM players that will make it possible for almost anyone to use CDs. Such devices could be used to give presentations.
