The National

Article Abstract:

The National, a 40-page tabloid published in New York City, is a sports newspaper distributed Monday through Friday nationwide. The paper is assembled in New York and printed overnight at 14 sites in the US. The complicated solution to this publishing situation is based on a mix of 100 Macintosh, PC, Sun and proprietary Cybergraphic terminals that run a form of UNIX. Other equipment includes Scitex Visionary, two DEC MicroVAX 3900 minicomputers, 85 Compaq LTE laptops, scanners, plotters, network servers, imagesetters, and satellite links. The whole scheme is connected via an Ethernet network. Each night 100 pages are produced for the daily four editions, and up to 20 pages are closed per hour. Photos are scanned and retrieved electronically with AP/Leaf Picture Desk workstations. The paper plans to break even in about three years, and become profitable in five years.

Recession isn't all bad news

Article Abstract:

Many corporate publishers say the efficiency of their in-house publishing systems has insulated them from the effects of the recession. Because many companies no longer send publishing jobs out of house, computer equipment salespeople notice a tremendous increase in their business, and are actually benefitting from the recession. This is because many companies that otherwise would not have considered purchasing desktop publishing systems have done so because of the recession. Most companies are quite pleased with the money they are saving by doing their work in-house.

The CD-ROM is included with every copy of the $49.95 hardcopy version.
