Workshop

Article Abstract:

Step-by-step instructions for adding shading to graphics created with vector drawing packages are presented. The first step with any of the three programs is to create the line art with the standard graphics tools available. Setting up and using a wide brush tip or variable tip that can change widths is necessary for smooth shading; the latter option works best with a pressure-sensitive graphics tablet. Step three is to use a tint fill pattern with no stroke; shading over a color such as a skin tone requires a tint that is a slightly darker. Step four is to apply shading to the artwork, either by carefully aligning the edges of the brushstroke to those of the line art or by swabbing and scribbling to create a hand-brushed effect. The next step entails selecting all shading objects and sending them behind the line art. Designers should then try other fill patterns and ink-pen effects.

Getting a little perspective

Article Abstract:

Techniques for creating the illusion of 3D perspective in popular drawing packages are presented. Adobe Illustrator 7.1, Macromedia FreeHand 8, and CorelDraw 8 for Windows have a good rectangle tool for drawing a rectangle the size of the finished illustration and then making a smaller copy. The next step is to connect the smaller rectangle to the large one with a series of diagonal lines; specific instructions for doing so in each product are given. Grid lines can then be created for use as non-printing guides. Drawing the sides of 3D objects is easier with the diagonal depth lines as guides; artists should maintain right-angled horizontal and vertical lines for the front object face, a technique that is easily adapted to create vanishing points from a two-point perspective. Separate products for creating 3D, such as CorelDepth and Adobe Dimensions, are also available.
