A century of change

Article Abstract:

During the First World War rent control was introduced to stop landlords profiteering during the war and after the war it was felt necessary for some control to be retained over the private housing sector. By the 1970s home ownership had become far more popular, with 52% of people owning their own homes, and by the 1990s some 67% of the population lived in their own homes. Until the introduction of the UK Town and Country Planning Act in 1947 very little of the country was covered by planning laws. The law of property has changed mainly due to the influence of politics and society.

It's all a matter of time

Article Abstract:

A monk, Dionysius Exiguss, calculated the birth of Christ from when he was conceived, therefore the first year of Christ's life was known as 1AD. By following Dionysius's calculations March 25, or Lady Day, was considered to the be date of the new year by Christians. Changes to the calender were made in 1578 by Pope Gregory XIII. The UK government introduced the Calender (New Style) Act 1750. The act made paying bills, such as rents, 11 days late therefore 11 days were added to Lady Day for settling debts which is April 5. Hence the British tax year starts in April.
