A fatal attraction

Article Abstract:

UK property firm Shaftesbury's purchase of the Trocadero island site in London brings to an end the last high-profile receivership sparked by the property crash of the late 1980s. The site forms an island linking Shaftesbury Avenue, Rupert Street and Wardour Street. Shaftesbury has played a major role in rehabilitating the area and raising its profile, by acting as adviser to the receiver of the Rialto cinema and other properties. The purchase of the site for 31 million pounds sterling, harks back to the past for Shaftesbury, since its predecessor, Stock Conversion, used to own it.

Tigers take a mauling

Article Abstract:

Financial markets in Asia are experiencing a downturn, with share values falling and currencies in decline. The fall in the economies of many Asian countries will have an affect on the property industry within those countries such as in Thailand and Malaysia. Research has found that during 1996-97 rental values in Thailand fell by 30%. The construction of new buildings in Thailand has led to supply outstripping demand with many retail outlets and offices remaining empty. Some industry observers suggest that the markets will return to a period of growth during 1997-1999.

Take your fill

Article Abstract:

UK waste management legislation affects landfill sites which are affected by the Landfill Tax and the 1995 Environment Act. Refuse has long been buried in such sites in the UK, and this can pollute nearby water. The Environment act is not scheduled for implementation until 1997 but the tax will come into force in Oct 1996. Landscaping derelict land is expansive and the tax could prevent this. Local government and landowners are seeking changes and exemptions from central government.
