A space odyssey: finding a building for Amoco's new European Services company turned into a major space planning and refurbishment exercise at the company's London Exploration office

Article Abstract:

Amoco was seeking a suitable office building for its new European Shared Services division, and cost was an important factor. Research by Healey & Baker found that the most economic solution would be found in the UK, with the area around Heathrow being the optimum area for skills and communications. Swanke Hayden Connell, an architect and space planner, was called in to undertake a needs assessment analysis and a study of the way existing office space was used. It was found that redesigning the Amoco House layout could create new space, and this would involve the use of temporary accommodation, whilst refurbishment was undertaken. The operation is currently running on time and on budget.

Votes for homes: empty office buildings are proving a boon to developers who are stepping in with plans to convert them to flats

Article Abstract:

Local authorities do not always support the change of use from offices to flats as it is regarded as loss of employment and rateable value. Imry and Berkeley, a housebuilder, have joined forces to convert Alexander Fleming House at Elephant & Castle into 400 flats, and planning permission is being sought for redundant BT offices at Camelford House at Vauxhaull to be converted, by Chelsfield.
