All the fun of the Fairfield

Article Abstract:

The retail market in Croydon, England, will be helped by the construction of a new 400 million pounds sterling shopping centre. The scheme is likely to compete for permission with a planned extension to the Drummond Centre. Some 90 million pounds sterling is planned to be spent on extending the Fairfields Halls and building other leisure facilities around it. A 60 million pounds sterling 200,000 sq ft leisure development is planned on the site of the old Grants store. It will include a 14 screen cinema. Croydon is also likely to benefit from the new 18 miles of tramway called Tramlink.

Shoppers' paradise?

Article Abstract:

It is possible for the traditional High Street to exist alongside out-of-town developments in the UK, according to speakers at the recent Hillier Parker/Estates Gazette retail conference, entitled '2001 - A Space Odyssey.' There will continue to be strong investment in the retail sector, with retailers increasingly meeting consumer demand for services such as longer shopping hours and home delivery. The key issue in the 21st century will be critical mass, rather than conflict between High Street and out-of-town retailing.

Hungry for phase two

Article Abstract:

Demand for retail sites in Dublin is strong, with many of the out-of-town centres planning to expand. The retail warehouse market is also buoyant although it is likely the very large stores will no longer be given planning permission. The city centre has few vacant retail units but rents are not rising quickly as so few sites come onto the market. Local agents suggest the underperformance of the newly opened out-of-town shopping centre, Liffey Valley, has been mainly due to it lacking a supermarket.
