Armchair revolution

Article Abstract:

A study into home shopping in the UK predicted that by the year 2002 some 10% of sales will be via the Internet. A few major supermarket chains are developing their home shopping services. Industry experts suggest that retailers are introducing home shopping facilities in order to retain custom rather than extend their businesses. The growth of home shopping will result in the larger stores acting as warehouse facilities, although in areas of high demand new warehousing space will be required. Tesco PLC runs a limited home shopping service via the Internet and by the telephone or fax.

The benefits of hindsight

Article Abstract:

UK banks and building societies are taking considerable risks in their approaches to lending on property, according to the Bank of England and the Association of Property Bankers. Some banks have reduced interest rates to less than 100 basis points above LIBOR as competition becomes fiercer, and it is now common for them to offer loans of between 80% and 85% of the value of a property. However, some observers believe that lenders are taking a different approach from that which was seen during the lending boom of the late 1980s.

Ringing the changes

Article Abstract:

Within the banking industry since 1990, over 127,000 jobs have been lost, and 2,500 branches closed. Most of these job losses are due to developments in technology. Sainsbury PLC intends to run full banking services from its supermarkets. Whilst the clearing banks divert resources into other services such as telephone banking, four major building societies will convert from mutual societies to banks.
