Asia's developing economies: the world's hottest markets for '97 business expansion

Article Abstract:

Many analysts consider Asia's developing economies, especially China and the Philippines, to be the best in terms of business opportunities in 1997. China and its 2.4 billion population represents a vast and largely untapped market with huge potential for profits. The Philippines, which has lagged behind its neighbors in the past, is now poised for economic takeoff because of its political stability and English-speaking population. South American nations such as Chile, Brazil and Argentina are also attractive markets but growth in these regions is not expected to be as spectacular as that seen in Asia.

Who's got the best incentives? It depends

Article Abstract:

Financial incentives being proffered by all state governments have largely predicated prominent corporate site selection activities in 1999. This raises the question of which state furnishes the most outstanding incentives to industry. The answer, however, depends on the particular company's requirements, the industry within which it operates and the physical location of the facility. Some firms stand to benefit more from franchise tax exemptions while others find income tax credits more useful.
