Article Abstract:

Several of the major coffee house chains are opening outlets in the UK, with many taking advantage of the increasing potential for new business outside London, England. Coffee Republic plans to invest 8.5 million pounds sterling in new coffee houses whilst the Seattle Coffee Co intends to open 20 new outlets. It is predicted the market for coffee houses may increase to over 1,200 outlets from its 1998 total of about 200. Costa Coffee is proposing to increase its number of outlets by about 100 from a total of 85, in early 1998. Costa Coffee also has links with bookshops and gyms.

Future plans include a new hotel and two entertainment centres at the Five Ways site and at Centenary Square. Some local agents suggest that the area could be expanded further but new developments must be different from what is already available. The renovation of a school in Oozells Street is being undertaken to make the new Ikon Gallery and a theatre is due to be completed by 1998.
