Better guidance urged for waste sites in green belts

Article Abstract:

It is time to bring about a wider acceptance of the appropriateness of landfill and landraise work in green belt areas, according to the Environmental Services Association. In particular, it is necessary to amend green belt policies to ensure that landfill and landraise waste sites are not seen as encroaching on green belt land. At present, planning guidance states specifically that mineral extraction work is not inappropriate in green belts, but does not do this for landfill and landraise activities.

Sandwich rich in listed buildings

Article Abstract:

The most recent 'English Heritage Monitor' gives extensive details of the buildings listed as specially protected by the department of national heritage. Some 4,000 were added to the list in 1994, and it now contains 447,000. Historic buildings are now being seen as a key element in attracting tourists to the UK, and more and more are now being opened to the public. However, the report also points to the fact that newer buildings are tending to spoil the character of historic towns.

RSPB calls for new coastline plans

Article Abstract:

There is a need for more integrated planning of the coast, according to the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB). At present, various different agencies are responsible for different aspects of coastline control, and there is an artificial division between above and below the water mark. Local authorities should be given a greater role in coastal zone matters.
