Can Kvaerner re-launch U.S. shipbuilding?

Article Abstract:

Kvaerner's construction of a new shipyard in Philadelphia, PA, which is also the first US shipyard built since World War II, is expected to revitalize the country's commercial shipbuilding industry. The project involves $430 million worth of federal, state and local incentives and will create at least 1,000 new jobs. However, controversy also surrounds the project. The American Shipbuilding Assn, for instance, claims that the federal subsidies given to Kvaerner will damage the domestic shipbuilding firms. The company's deals with foreign suppliers have also drawn criticism.
