Case study: Mazda's big move to Mississippi

Article Abstract:

Mazda (North America) Inc. began scouting out possible sites for a new parts center in 1990 after it realized that its distribution system was inadequate for the company's changing needs. After taking Mazda's supplier base and shipment patterns into account, company officials decided that a location in the US Southeast, in particular the Memphis, TN, area, would best suit their needs. However, the company chose Olive Branch, a small Mississippi city, instead of Memphis due to the former's many advantages including its low labor costs and access to major distribution centers.
