Development fanfare

Article Abstract:

The British Regeneration Board has faced a challenge in encouraging investment into formally deprived and run-down areas, such as Grimethorpe, Yorkshire, England. Some observers point out the area will be competing against other sites, such as Dearne Valley, which have already been developed. The closure of the coalfields in Grimethorpe led to massive job losses, with 33% unemployment in some villages. Some 25 million pounds sterling has been spent on redeveloping a 255 acre site, known as Park Springs. It is hoped the scheme will bring 1,050 jobs to the area by 2001.

Philadelphia region buoyed by strong suburban performance

Article Abstract:

Economic indicators for the Philadelphia, PA, metropolitan area appear to support economists' predictions of more expansion and growth in 1998. An analysis of the real estate market in this region in first qtr 1998 reflects robust growth which is indicative of the region's brisk economic development in the future. A combination of low interest rates, a healthy economy and sustained business development has resulted in depressed vacancy rates and an increasing demand for office space which will most probably continue.

Gazelles and incentives: a failure to communicate?

Article Abstract:

The 'self-absorption' of many high-growth companies or gazelles have blinded them to the many incentives offered by state economic development agencies. Almost all economic development agencies have programs for gazelles, ranging from tax incentives to free land or buildings. But the lack of a dedicated real estate division and its focus on fast reaction and short term needs have many many gazelles pass up the opportunities offered by economic development agencies.
