The rule against bias

Article Abstract:

The UK legal system accepts the concept of those sitting in judgement of others must not be biased in any way and they should declare their position, if they are asked to decide upon a case where it may be considered they have an interest. Legal representatives of Chilean Former President Senator Augusto Pinochet successfully called for a retrial by the House of Lords, in Dec 1998, when it was found one of the lords sitting in judgement had links with Amnesty International Ltd. Other cases have arisen when decisions have had to be set aside where incidents of bias may have occurred.

What's the best inducement?

Article Abstract:

The UK Finance Act 1999 have introduced taxation on tenants incentives, such as a period of the lease which is rent-free, for all contracts agreed after Mar. 9, 1999. Taxation will have to be paid on all types of inducements apart from some forms of incentives, such as fit out costs. The tax liabilities of both the landlords and tenants will have implications for working out ways of avoiding the tax. Tenants are sometimes granted rent-free periods of a few months in order to prepare the new building for occupation or use whilst other rent free periods may go on for years.

Bill fails to put paid to price secrecy

Article Abstract:

The Freedom of Information Bill (FOIB) should make it necessary for Land Registry sale prices to be published, according to surveyors body Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors. Price-paid property information has been kept secret in England for many years. Legal body Law Society hopes to protect this secrecy, even though other nations, including Scotland, has published it for years.
