Article Abstract:

The UK Conservative Party's attitude to development has changed during its 16 years in power and its current emphasis on development plans is in line with Labour Party views on the subject. In the 1980s the Conservative government aimed to reduce bureaucracy and almost abolished development control in some areas, but in the 1990s it has raised the importance of development plans and the necessity for planning proposals to accord with these. The improvement in the economy will lead to an increasing number of challenges to the plan-led system but the policy is unlikely to change.
