Environment Bill - new controls

Article Abstract:

The UK real estate industry is affected by the Environment Bill, which went through a parliamentary reading in Dec 1994. The bill integrates pollution controls and establishes primary legislation for tackling flood defenses, national parks, abandoned mines and contaminated land. The bill should give a flexible framework for new legislation on the environment in line with European Union directives. Details as to how it will affect the real estate industry have yet to be assessed.

Appealing to common sense

Article Abstract:

Many of the proposals put forward by the UK Dept of the Environment, Transport and the Regions to improve the rating appeal process will have a positive impact. However, some of the proposals, especially those dealing with the deadlines on appeals, should be amended if certain problems are to be avoided. These problems include those arising from the proposal to limit the backdating of reductions in rateable value.
