Business connections

Article Abstract:

British Council for Offices (BCO) President Geoffrey Lander is very keen to encourage better communication between landlords and tenants. He wants both sides to be more prepared to compromise. Lander reports how the use of a property consultant in his practice as a lawyer helped the firm to reduce their property costs. The BCO has a wide range of members which includes the chief executives from the City, major developers and firms of architects. He is keen to further increase the membership of the BCO to include landlords such as Tesco PLC, who are also tenants in some of their buildings.

Gestures of commitment

Article Abstract:

It will take some time to create trust within the RICS, the institution for chartered surveyors, according to new Chief Executive John Armstrong. He is keen to be open with RICS members and staff, and will initially seek to overcome internal power struggles. He also sees his role as putting the vision for the RICS presented by President Richard Lay into action and encouraging commitment to this vision among members. He does not believe that it would be appropriate for him to take on the role of spokesperson for the surveying profession.

A conventional progressive

Article Abstract:

RICS President Peter McKendrick supports the notion that planning procedures should take less time and that planning regulations should be changed in order that older property can be renovated. McKendrick is concerned that the work of chartered surveyors is not always seen as important and therefore has difficulty in attracting high calibre students. He fears that interest in property investment may dwindle if the process of valuation is not made more accurate. McKendirick has been a Fellow of the RICS since 1969.
